World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 victory over Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko on Friday. The Belarusian, seeking her first Wimbledon title, will now face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the last 16 on Sunday.
Dominant Performance Against Ostapenko
Sabalenka, 28, broke Ostapenko's serve early in both sets and maintained consistent pressure. The 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko showed resistance in the second set, saving break points and holding serve to level at 4-4, but Sabalenka raised her level to secure the decisive break and close out the match. Sabalenka won 71% of her first-serve points and hit 22 winners.
Upcoming Clash with Osaka
Sabalenka will face Naomi Osaka, who has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time. Sabalenka holds a 3-1 head-to-head record against Osaka, including a straight-sets win at the French Open last month. However, Sabalenka suffered a surprise quarterfinal loss to Diana Shnaider after that match. “Another aggressive player. Another very powerful match. I’m ready to fight and do whatever it takes to get through,” Sabalenka said of the upcoming encounter.
Sabalenka's Wimbledon Ambitions
Sabalenka has lost in the semifinals in each of her past three visits to Wimbledon. She is bidding to reach a 15th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. A win over Osaka would keep her on track for a maiden Wimbledon title, having previously won the Australian Open (2023, 2024) and the US Open (2024).
