Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change Chairperson Senator Sherry Rehman on Tuesday asserted that India's continued effort to keep the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance is contrary to international law and the established principles governing transboundary water cooperation.
India's Actions Violate International Law
In a statement, Senator Rehman emphasized that the treaty contains no provision allowing either party to suspend or terminate it unilaterally. She noted that Pakistan, as the lower riparian state, views the issue with "the utmost seriousness."
Treaty Remains in Force
Sherry Rehman stressed that the IWT remains in force under international law, and India's actions undermine the framework that has governed water sharing between the two countries for decades. She called for adherence to the treaty's mechanisms for dispute resolution.
