Iran's foreign ministry has issued a stern warning of 'decisive measures' following a series of US strikes near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with state media reporting multiple explosions on Iranian territory. The escalation marks a significant breach of the memorandum of understanding between the two nations aimed at ending the Middle East war.
Explosions Reported Across Iranian Coast
Iranian state media IRIB reported on Tuesday that six explosions were heard on the island of Qeshm, seven explosions in the city of Sirik, and additional blasts in the major port city of Bandar Abbas. The strikes come shortly after US officials announced 'powerful' strikes on Iran, raising tensions in the region.
Iran's Warning and Accusations
In a statement posted to Telegram by IRIB News, Iran's foreign ministry accused the United States of repeatedly violating the bilateral memorandum of understanding. 'Iran is issuing a serious warning about the consequences of America’s breach of the treaty, and will take decisive measures to protect its interests and national security,' the ministry said. The statement also pointed to ongoing US aggression in Lebanon and other threats as evidence of continued hostility.
US Revokes Sanctions Waiver After Tanker Strikes
The US revoked a temporary sanctions waiver for Iranian oil on Tuesday, following the targeting of three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The move intensifies pressure on Tehran as it negotiates with Washington over ending the broader Middle East conflict. British maritime security agency UKMTO reported that an 'unknown projectile' struck a tanker overnight, causing a fire, before two more vessels were hit, at least one by a drone. All three strikes occurred near Oman, which had proposed a temporary transit corridor hugging its coastline—an initiative opposed by Iran as it seeks to impose fees on ships using the Strait of Hormuz.
Strategic Implications
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any disruption heightens economic and security concerns worldwide. Iran's threat of 'decisive' action signals potential further escalation, while the US revocation of the sanctions waiver adds economic strain. The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts to end the war now under severe strain.
