The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a forecast for intermittent pre-monsoon rainfall across parts of Pakistan from June 28 to July 3, warning of heightened risks including glacier melting, flash floods, and landslides in the country's northern regions.
Increased Risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods
According to the NDMA, the combination of intense heat and expected pre-monsoon showers could accelerate glacier melting, leading to a sudden rise in water levels in rivers and streams across Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The authority warned that vulnerable areas may face glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides during the forecast period.
High-Risk Districts Identified
Residents, tourists, and travelers have been advised to exercise caution while visiting high-risk districts, including Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper and Lower Chitral, and Swat. The NDMA urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, glacial lakes, and riverbanks, and to immediately report any unusual situation to relevant local authorities.
Preparedness Measures
The Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure all necessary preparations are in place to address any emergencies arising from the expected weather conditions. This proactive approach aims to mitigate potential damages and ensure swift response to any incidents.
