On the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converged on the Plain of Arafat, marking the most sacred and spiritually defining stage of the Hajj pilgrimage. The event, which took place under stringent security and health protocols, saw pilgrims engaging in prayer and supplication from dawn until sunset.
Day of Arafat: Central Pillar of Hajj
The Day of Arafat is considered the pinnacle of Hajj, with the Prophet Muhammad stating that the pilgrimage is invalid without standing at Arafat. Pilgrims gathered at the vast plain, located about 20 kilometers southeast of Makkah, dominated by the Mount of Mercy (Jabal Al-Rahmah). In Islamic tradition, this site is associated with the reunion of Adam and Eve and holds profound spiritual significance.
Sermon at Namirah Mosque
Pilgrims also attended the annual Hajj sermon at Namirah Mosque, the second-largest mosque in the Makkah region. The sermon was delivered by Sheikh Ali bin Abdulrahman Al-Hudhaifi, imam of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. During the sermon, Dhuhr and Asr prayers were combined and shortened, following a tradition established by Prophet Muhammad over 14 centuries ago. Al-Hudhaifi emphasized monotheism, sincerity in worship, patience, gratitude, and moral integrity, urging pilgrims to adhere strictly to the rituals as per the Prophet's example.
Efficient Transportation and Security
The General Transport Center, operating under the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, confirmed that the transportation of pilgrims from Mina to Arafat was completed before 8 a.m., two hours earlier than the previous year. A fleet of 24,000 buses was deployed, alongside integrated crowd-control systems, medical services, and emergency response units. The Facilities Security Forces played a key role in safeguarding infrastructure and maintaining order.
Health and Safety Measures
The Ministry of Health reported no outbreaks of disease or epidemics, attributing this to preventive measures, coordination among authorities, and a prepared healthcare system across holy sites. Pilgrims adhered to health guidelines, ensuring a safe environment.
Pilgrims' Experiences
Pilgrims expressed profound joy and gratitude. Aliyu Biu from Nigeria said, "I feel very nice. The Saudi government has done a lot for us, and we enjoyed it." Kazi Habiburahman from Bangladesh shared, "We are witnessing something very special. I pray for all Muslims." Kassim Assadi from Jordan described the feeling as "indescribable" and praised Saudi services.
Official Statements
Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Makkah, welcomed pilgrims, stating that the Kingdom has mobilized all capabilities to facilitate the pilgrimage. He commended pilgrims for their cooperation and adherence to guidelines, emphasizing that serving pilgrims is a deeply rooted mission.
Preparations for Next Stages
As pilgrims spend the day in Arafat, Saudi authorities are intensifying preparations in Muzdalifah and Mina for the remaining rites. Extensive cleaning and sanitation operations are underway, alongside maintenance of infrastructure and service facilities.
