More than 832,000 farmers have been issued Kissan Cards under the Punjab government's agricultural support programme, enabling them to access subsidised financing and agricultural inputs, according to official figures. Farmers have so far utilised agricultural loans worth Rs25.4 billion through the Kissan Card facility. During the wheat cultivation season, they purchased agricultural inputs valued at more than Rs100 billion.
Strong Repayment Record
Officials said that of the Rs67 billion recoverable from 538,000 farmers, around 86 per cent has been recovered. Farmers have repaid instalments amounting to Rs57 billion, reflecting a strong repayment record under the scheme.
Kharif Season Support
For the ongoing Kharif season, the government has made Rs90 billion available through the Kissan Card programme for the purchase of agricultural inputs. So far, around 300,000 farmers have obtained inputs worth Rs30 billion under the initiative.
Chief Minister's Remarks
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the programme was helping improve the livelihoods of farmers across the province by providing them with direct access to financial assistance. She said the initiative would reduce farmers' dependence on middlemen and help strengthen their financial position. The chief minister added that the government's objective was to promote financial independence and prosperity within the farming community.
She also commended farmers for their timely repayment of agricultural loans, describing it as a positive indicator of the programme's effectiveness.
