New Marvel's Wolverine Details: Combat, Story, Characters

Insomniac Games has unveiled fresh details about Marvel's Wolverine following the release of new gameplay footage during PlayStation's State of Play presentation. The footage offered a closer look at combat mechanics, story elements, accessibility features, and several familiar Marvel characters. The PlayStation 5 exclusive is scheduled to launch on September 15 and is being developed by Insomniac Games in partnership with Marvel Games.

According to the studio, the title is designed to deliver a mature interpretation of Wolverine while remaining focused on Logan's personal story. Creative director Marcus Smith stated that the new footage was intended to demonstrate that the game embraces the character's violent nature while also offering narrative depth. He explained, "It's planting our flag that this is a mature game." Smith added that players uncomfortable with graphic violence will have the option to reduce visual intensity through a low-gore accessibility setting.

The gameplay footage highlighted several key mechanics, including traversal, stealth, and Wolverine's signature claw combat. Game director Mike Daly explained that Logan's movement abilities, enhanced senses, and stealth options all connect directly to combat encounters, which remain the core focus of the gameplay experience. Daly said players will have access to a wide range of attacks, special moves, and strategic options. Combat will also include environmental interactions and team-based sequences involving Jean Grey.

The trailer additionally revealed appearances from several well-known Marvel characters. While speculation emerged that Deadpool appeared in the footage, Smith clarified that the character shown was not Deadpool. However, he confirmed appearances by Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Mystique. Insomniac also revealed that its version of the Marvel universe does not include the X-Men as an active team. Instead, Logan is part of Team X, a group that helps protect mutants living in secrecy.

The developers also addressed Wolverine's healing factor. Daly explained that Logan can die if his heart stops, although players may trigger a recovery ability using accumulated rage during combat.
