The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has strongly criticised K-Electric, accusing the power utility of worsening the difficulties faced by Karachi residents during the ongoing heatwave through extended power outages.
Double ordeal for citizens
In a statement, an MQM-P spokesperson said citizens were enduring a “double ordeal” due to rising temperatures and what the party termed K-Electric’s “criminal negligence” and persistent loadshedding. “The KE has crossed all limits. Up to 14 hours of loadshedding has become a severe hardship for the people of the country’s economic hub,” the spokesperson said.
Allegations of revenue misuse
The party alleged that despite collecting billions of rupees from consumers through electricity bills and overbilling, K-Electric had failed to improve its aging transmission network. According to the statement, the utility company has not taken adequate measures to modernise its outdated infrastructure, even after generating substantial revenue from customers. “Even after generating massive revenues from consumers, the company has taken no meaningful steps to modernize its obsolete transmission system, which is no longer capable of handling even moderate demand,” the statement said.
Impact on residents
MQM-P maintained that the deteriorating condition of the transmission system was contributing to frequent power outages, adding to the hardships faced by residents already struggling with extreme summer temperatures.
