Epilogue, the maker of the GB Operator accessory, has released a new mobile app called Flashback that allows users to connect the classic Game Boy Camera to their smartphones. The GB Operator, priced at $50, already enabled Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges to be played on PCs and other devices. Now, with the Flashback app available for iOS and Android, users can capture photos directly from the Game Boy Camera's sensor through their phone.
Game Boy Camera: A Retro Classic
The Game Boy Camera, originally released in 1998, captured images at a resolution of 0.01434 megapixels in four shades of gray. Despite its poor quality even for its time, it was popular due to its affordability at $90. The camera's images were difficult to extract without a printer or a third-party cable. Epilogue's solution modernizes this experience by allowing direct digital access through the GB Operator and the Flashback app.
Flashback App Features and Filters
The Flashback app reads data straight from the Game Boy Camera's Mitsubishi M64282FP sensor, ensuring images look exactly as they did decades ago. However, the app offers enhanced controls including adjustments for shutter speed, gain, exposure, sharpness, dither, and grain. Users can also apply one of 32 different color palettes to add color to the monochrome images. Captured photos are saved directly to the phone's Camera Roll for easy sharing.
Alternative and Simulation Mode
For those without a Game Boy Camera or GB Operator, the Flashback app includes a software simulation mode. This mode processes photos taken with the smartphone's camera and outputs them as low-resolution 128 x 112-pixel images with dithering and a minimal color palette. This provides a similar retro aesthetic without requiring the original hardware. The GB Operator paired with the Flashback app is a cheaper alternative to devices like the $240 Analogue Pocket, which also supports the Game Boy Camera.
