England secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico on Sunday at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals. Despite playing most of the second half with 10 men, the Three Lions ended the co-hosts' deepest tournament run in 40 years.
First-half dominance by England
Jude Bellingham put England ahead with two goals in the space of a minute. He first finished a cross from Bukayo Saka, then tapped in a pass from Harry Kane to stun the home crowd. Mexico pulled one back before halftime when Julian Quinones reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box and fired into the roof of the net, reviving the co-hosts' hopes.
Second-half drama with red card and penalties
England were reduced to 10 men early in the second half after Jarrell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review. Despite the disadvantage, Harry Kane restored England's two-goal lead with a penalty after Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel fouled Anthony Gordon. Mexico's Raul Jimenez then reduced the deficit with another penalty after a VAR review confirmed a foul by Kane on Brian Gutierrez.
Weather delay and next opponent
The match was delayed by one hour due to adverse weather conditions around the Azteca Stadium. England will face Norway in the quarter-finals in Miami on Saturday.
