Oath-Taking Ceremony in Gilgit
Pakistan Peoples Party’s Amjad Hussain was sworn in as the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, July 6, 2026, in a ceremony held in Gilgit. The event was attended by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, underscoring the party's high-level support for the new administration.
Electoral Victory and Assembly Seats
Hussain was elected to the role on June 22, following the June 7 regional elections. In those polls, the PPP emerged as the largest party, securing 12 seats in the 24-member Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. This gave the party a clear mandate to form the government.
Acknowledgment of Voter Support
Addressing the ceremony after taking the oath, Hussain highlighted the crucial role played by the region’s youth and women in the elections. He stated that the PPP candidates won several seats thanks to their active participation. Hussain specifically thanked the people of Nagar, who, he said, gave the PPP a 100 percent result and delivered two seats. He described the heavy mandate as an expression of public confidence in the PPP.
Traditional Strongholds
Hussain noted that the Gilgit and Baltistan divisions have traditionally been areas where the PPP commands a strong mandate. He expressed gratitude to the residents for maintaining their support for the party in the recent elections. The ceremony was also shared on social media by the PPP’s official account, which posted a live stream of the oath-taking.
