Bilawal Calls for Political Unity in National Assembly Address
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday urged all political parties to unite in addressing the country's challenges, while criticising certain federal ministers for creating obstacles for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instead of supporting his efforts. Addressing the National Assembly, Bilawal questioned the conduct of some cabinet members, saying their actions reflected a confrontational political approach rather than cooperation.
Criticism of Federal Ministers
Bilawal specifically criticised a minister who, according to him, claimed that Rawalakot residents are not Kashmiris, asking how such a person could continue serving in the federal cabinet. He also referred to the defence minister's remarks, saying the minister was unwilling to apologise despite efforts by all political parties, including the government, to find a political solution to issues concerning Azad Kashmir.
Call for Dialogue and Role for Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Bilawal reiterated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is committed to steering the country through its current difficulties and stressed that dialogue and negotiations remain the only effective way to resolve political disputes. He proposed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman be given a role in addressing the ongoing situation, suggesting that he engage with both protesters and the Azad Kashmir government to help reach a peaceful solution.
Demand for Local Government Elections
The PPP chairman also called for local government elections across the country, demanding immediate polls in Islamabad and advocating a model local governance system. He said efforts would be made to hold local body elections in Gilgit-Baltistan within the next 90 days. Bilawal maintained that local government systems are functioning wherever the PPP is in power and accused the Pakistan Muslim League (N) of resisting such structures in areas under its administration. He urged the adoption of a local government model in Lahore similar to the one operating in Karachi.
Comments on MQM and Call for Consensus
Commenting on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Bilawal said that if the party's demands are not addressed, it should reconsider its participation in the federal government. He concluded by emphasising that the country requires political consensus rather than division and expressed hope that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would succeed in overcoming the challenges facing Pakistan.
