Former US President Joe Biden on Sunday delivered a blistering critique of his successor, President Donald Trump, at a Maryland Democratic Party fundraiser held at a casino. In a 10-minute speech, Biden called Trump corrupt, narcissistic, and incompetent, marking one of his strongest public criticisms since leaving office.
Biden Attacks Trump's Vanity and Conduct
Biden targeted Trump's personal projects, stating, “It’s not just his vanity projects, tearing down the East Wing of the White House, making room for his ballroom, putting his name on the Kennedy Centre, building an arch in his own honour, even hiring his own pool guy to fix the reflecting pool. Woah! What a loser.” The former president emphasized that the reflecting pool “reflects something even worse than the narcissism and incompetence at the core of this administration.”
Corruption Allegations and January 6 Remarks
Biden escalated his criticism by accusing Trump of corruption on an unprecedented scale. “It’s the corruption, the corruption, the brazen, blatant corruption. Corruption on a scale never seen before in American history in any administration,” he said. He further condemned Trump's proposal to compensate individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. “What makes me angry is that Trump wants to give taxpayers’ money, your money, to the January 6th insurrectionists. That’s what he wants to do,” Biden told the crowd. “These people don’t deserve to be compensated. They deserve to be put in jail for a long, long, long time.”
Context of the Speech
The fundraiser took place at a Maryland casino, where Biden aimed to rally Democratic supporters. His remarks come amid ongoing political tensions, with Trump recently unveiling a new US passport featuring his own picture. Biden's speech underscores the deepening divide between the two political figures as the 2024 election cycle approaches.
