The National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, which was scheduled for Wednesday with the Prime Minister in the chair, has been postponed for the second time and rescheduled for next week. The Cabinet Division announced on Tuesday that the meeting originally planned for June 3, 2026, has been postponed, with a new date to be communicated later.
Background of Postponements
Initially, the NEC meeting was set for May 22 but was postponed and rescheduled to June 3. However, it has now been postponed again. Sources indicate that the meeting is likely to be held on June 8, 2026, though no official confirmation has been provided.
Agenda of the NEC Meeting
The NEC meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, is expected to review the national investment plan for 2025-26 and finalize the national investment plan for 2026-27. It will also examine the provisional GDP growth figures for the outgoing fiscal year FY2025-26 and finalize the figures for the previous fiscal year FY24-25. Additionally, the council will review performance reports of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) and the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) for the ongoing fiscal year 2025-26.
Key Recommendations from APCC
Notably, the Annual Plan Coordination Committee (APCC) on Monday recommended a record national development outlay of Rs4.715 trillion and a GDP growth target of 4 percent for the upcoming fiscal year 2026-27, pending NEC approval. The postponement comes amid ongoing economic assessments and planning efforts by the government.
