Police in Rawalpindi have made a significant breakthrough in a high-profile honour killing case, apprehending two fugitives who had been evading capture. The arrests bring all individuals accused in the murder of 19-year-old Sidra Arab into custody.
Victim Defied Family for Marriage Choice
The tragic sequence of events began on July 17, when Sidra Arab left her home after a dispute with her family. The conflict arose from her decision to contract a marriage of her own choice, a act of self-determination that would have fatal consequences. After she left, she was brought back to her family.
Jirga's Fatal Verdict and Burial
Upon her return, a traditional assembly, or jirga, was convened. This jirga, headed by a local figure, ultimately condemned the young woman. Following the jirga's decision, Sidra Arab was murdered in the name of so-called honour within the jurisdiction of Pirwadhai Police Station.
In a further attempt to conceal the crime, her body was later buried in a cemetery under mysterious circumstances. The clandestine burial delayed the discovery of the crime and the initiation of a formal investigation.
Police Investigation Nabs All Accused
Police officials stated that they had already arrested the main perpetrators, including the jirga head and the victim's husband. In total, 10 accused were previously taken into custody and remain in jail. However, two key suspects remained at large: Sidra's brother, Sohail, and another individual named Sanaullah.
The police announced on Monday that their persistent efforts have paid off, with both proclaimed offenders now in custody. Authorities have emphasized that a thorough investigation is being conducted to compile solid evidence for the court case, known as a challan.
All legal requirements are being fulfilled to ensure exemplary punishment in this grave case, a police official confirmed. The statement underscores the intent to pursue justice rigorously for the brutal murder that has shocked the community.
