Turkiye's foreign ministry on Monday strongly condemned Israeli incursions and artillery fire in southern Syria, following heightened tensions near the Golan Heights that prompted some residents to flee their homes.
Official Condemnation
In a statement, the Turkish ministry said: 'We strongly condemn the Israeli attacks against Quneitra and Daraa, which violate the territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty of Syria.' The statement further noted that these attacks 'trample on the lives and property of the Syrian people and make life increasingly difficult for civilians in the region, constituting a flagrant violation of international law.'
The ministry reiterated its call on the international community to 'fulfil its obligations and put an end to these attacks.'
Syrian Response and Israeli Claims
Syria's foreign ministry also condemned the Israeli incursions and shelling on Monday. The Israeli army claimed on Sunday it had killed 'several armed terrorists' the day before in the southern part of Syria that it has occupied since late 2024. Israel expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights in 2024 by seizing the demilitarised buffer zone that had been supervised by the United Nations.
Impact on Civilians
The recent violence has forced some local residents to flee their homes in the Quneitra and Daraa regions, according to reports. The Turkish statement highlighted the increasing difficulty for civilians living in the area due to the ongoing attacks.
