Shehbaz Hopeful Iran-US MoU Leads to Lasting Deal

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed hope that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran ahead of recent talks in Switzerland could pave the way for a long-term and sustainable agreement. Addressing the National Assembly, the prime minister referred to the summit held in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, where delegations from the US and Iran held extensive discussions. He said Pakistan and Qatar participated as mediators in the dialogue process.

Pakistan's Role in Mediation

“Pakistan made every sincere effort to help bridge the gap between the two sides,” Shehbaz Sharif said, adding that negotiations began on Sunday and continued late into the night, concluding after midnight on Monday. The prime minister said a ceasefire had been established between Iran and the United States, while technical-level talks would continue over the next two months. He noted that key issues under discussion include Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile capabilities, sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets.

Diplomatic Engagement and Regional Tensions

Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement had helped ease regional tensions and reflected the country’s constructive role in promoting peace and stability. “If the ongoing negotiations succeed, the memorandum of understanding could evolve into a permanent and long-lasting agreement within 60 days,” he added. The prime minister congratulated the nation, parliament and opposition parties, terming Pakistan’s role in the negotiations a significant diplomatic achievement that had received international recognition.
