The Chinese and Russian navies are set to conduct joint exercises in the waters and airspace off the city of Qingdao, China, starting next week, according to announcements from China’s defense ministry and Russian state media on Sunday.
Drills Aimed at Regional Stability
China’s defense ministry stated that the drills are an annual occurrence, “aimed at jointly addressing security challenges and maintaining regional peace and stability.” Following the exercises, some forces from both sides will proceed to relevant areas of the Pacific Ocean to carry out joint maritime patrols.
Russian Naval Assets Arrive in Qingdao
Russian state-run RIA news agency reported that a cruiser, a corvette, a diesel-electric submarine, and a rescue vessel from Russia’s Pacific Fleet have already arrived in Qingdao to participate in the drills, which are scheduled to run from July 6 to 13.
The joint exercises underscore the deepening military cooperation between China and Russia, as both nations seek to counterbalance Western influence and enhance their strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
