Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning, asserting that any reduction in pressure on Russian oil exports equates to directly financing Moscow's ongoing war against Ukraine. In a statement published on the social media platform X, Zelensky emphasized that "every dollar paid for Russian oil is money for the war," highlighting the critical link between energy revenue and military aggression.
Trump Administration's Waiver and Its Implications
Although Zelensky did not name any specific country, his remarks follow the Trump Administration's decision to grant a month-long waiver for purchasing Russian oil and petroleum products currently at sea. This initiative, aimed at stabilizing global energy prices, has drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv. Zelensky revealed that there are currently over 110 tankers containing more than 12 million tonnes of Russian crude navigating international waters. Under the reduced sanctions regime, these shipments are estimated to be worth approximately $10 billion in total.
Zelensky starkly noted, "$10 billion is the resource that is immediately converted into new blows against Ukraine." He argued that such financial inflows bolster Russia's capacity to sustain its military operations, directly impacting the conflict's intensity and duration.
Escalating Military Offensive and Human Toll
Further underscoring the urgency, Zelensky pointed to a significant escalation in Russian offensive actions over the past week. According to his statement, Russia has deployed:
- More than 2,360 drones
- 1,320 guided aerial bombs
- 59 rockets against Ukrainian cities
