Iran Issues Warning Ahead of Netanyahu's US Visit
Iran has issued a stark warning about "destructive" influences on diplomatic efforts, just ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's scheduled visit to Washington. The caution comes as Tehran and Washington have resumed critical negotiations in Muscat, marking a significant step after previous talks collapsed months ago.
Diplomatic Tensions and Regional Pressures
In a weekly press briefing, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei emphasized that the United States must decide to act independently from pressures that are detrimental to the region. "Our negotiating party is America. It is up to America to decide to act independently of the pressures and destructive influences that are detrimental to the region," Baqaei stated firmly.
He further accused Israel of repeatedly sabotaging diplomatic processes aimed at achieving peace in the region. "The Zionist regime has repeatedly, as a saboteur, shown that it opposes any diplomatic process in our region that leads to peace," Baqaei added, highlighting longstanding tensions.
Resumption of Talks After Conflict
The talks in Muscat on Friday represent a renewed effort after earlier negotiations broke down following Israel's unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran in June. This military action triggered a devastating 12-day war that saw:
- Israel targeting senior Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists
- Attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and residential areas
- United States joining with strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities
- Iran responding with drone and missile attacks on Israel

Baqaei reflected on this conflict, noting "The June experience was a very bad experience. Therefore, taking these experiences into account, we are determined to secure Iran's national interests through diplomacy."

Iran has maintained a strict focus on nuclear negotiations in exchange for sanctions relief, repeatedly rejecting any talks that extend beyond this core issue. However, Netanyahu's office issued a statement on Saturday outlining different expectations for any negotiations.
