A farmer from Attock has secured second position in a province-wide wheat yield competition organised by the Punjab Agriculture Department’s Extension Wing under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Competition Details and Achievement
According to an official press release, Shafiq Ahmed of Attock district achieved an impressive wheat yield of 970.69 maunds per acre, earning him second place in the provincial competition and a 75-horsepower tractor as a reward. The competition was held to encourage farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices and improve crop productivity across Punjab.
Selection and Verification Process
Farmers from various districts submitted applications to participate, following which a committee scrutinised entries and selected eligible contestants. Officials said the participating wheat plots were inspected and harvested in the presence of committee members to ensure transparency and accuracy in yield assessment. Agriculture authorities said the initiative was aimed at motivating growers to achieve higher production levels and promote best farming practices throughout the province.
District-Level Competitions and Prizes
Meanwhile, district-level wheat production competitions were also held. According to the Agriculture Department, cash prizes have been allocated for top-performing farmers at the district level. However, officials are expected to clarify the prize distribution figures announced in the press release.
Positive Trends in Wheat Cultivation
Agricultural officials further stated that wheat cultivation in Rawalpindi Division increased by approximately 36,000 acres compared with the previous year, reflecting growing interest among farmers in wheat production. The department also reported a 97 per cent recovery rate for interest-free agricultural loans provided under the Punjab government’s support programme for farmers in Rawalpindi Division.
Officials expressed hope that such incentive-based initiatives would contribute to increased agricultural productivity, improved food security, and greater adoption of modern farming techniques across the province.
