French Anti-Terror Investigation Targets Brothers in Antisemitic Plot
French anti-terror prosecutors have launched a formal investigation into two brothers suspected of orchestrating a "lethal and antisemitic" attack. The men, identified as Moroccan-Italian nationals aged 20 and 22, were apprehended last week in a vehicle in northern France, according to official statements.
Weapons and Evidence Seized in Arrest
During the arrest, officers discovered a loaded semi-automatic weapon, a bottle of hydrochloric acid, and a flag associated with the Islamic State group inside the car. This development comes as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East enters its third week, prompting heightened security alerts in numerous countries for potential terror attacks linked to the war.
In recent days, Jewish sites have been targeted in incidents across the United States, the Netherlands, and Belgium, underscoring global concerns. The brothers reportedly arrived in France with their parents in 2017, after the family had resided in Italy for several years.
Radicalization and Terrorist Plans Uncovered
Anti-terrorist prosecutors detailed in a statement that the brothers, after determining they could not engage in jihad in Syria or the Palestinian territories, had recently formulated a "terrorist plan in France, for which they aspired to martyrdom." Analysis of seized digital devices and testimonies from relatives revealed a significant radicalization over the past two years, with a notable intensification of their jihadist commitment just before their arrest.
The statement confirmed that the brothers had taken concrete steps in planning the antisemitic attack, though specifics about the nature of the alleged plot were not disclosed. Officials expressed worries that violence against Jewish communities worldwide could escalate due to tensions, including US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Global Incidents Highlight Rising Threats
Recent attacks have amplified these fears:
- An explosion at a Jewish school in Amsterdam occurred on Saturday, following a suspected arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam the previous day.
- In Liège, Belgium, a synagogue was damaged in an explosion.
- In Michigan, USA, a Lebanon-born gunman drove a pickup truck loaded with fireworks and petrol into a synagogue on Thursday, resulting in his suicide, as reported by police.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for vigilance and international cooperation in combating terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities.
