Pakistan Vows Retribution After Karachi Attack Kills 3

Attack on Karachi Rangers Facility

Pakistan's military has warned of 'retribution operations' following a militant attack on a paramilitary Rangers facility in Karachi that killed three soldiers and injured four others. The attack, which occurred on Saturday night, also resulted in the deaths of three militants and the capture of one injured assailant, identified as an Afghan national.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military's media wing, reported that militants from the proscribed group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar targeted the main gate of a Rangers camp in Karachi's Gulistan-e-Jauhar neighborhood. The attackers attempted to breach the facility after an explosion, but Rangers personnel neutralized the threat.

Military's Response

In a statement, the ISPR said, 'Pakistan shall undertake retribution operations against the perpetrators of this attack to avenge the Shahadat of its soldiers.' The military confirmed that three soldiers were martyred and four were injured in the exchange of fire.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the Rangers for thwarting the attack. According to a statement from his office, Sharif said, 'The nation stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its brave armed forces, the Rangers, and all law enforcement agencies. Our struggle will continue with full determination and resolve until the scourge of terrorism is completely eliminated.'

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar's Claim

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack. The group has historically targeted civilians, security personnel, and government officials, primarily in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban of supporting militant groups like the TTP, which carry out cross-border attacks. The Afghan Taliban deny these allegations and urge Pakistan to address its security challenges independently.

Regional Tensions

Pakistan has conducted airstrikes and military operations inside Afghanistan this year against alleged militant hideouts, following attacks on its security forces. These actions have led to clashes between the two countries, straining bilateral relations.

Islamabad also alleges that New Delhi funds militant groups based in Afghanistan, a charge India denies. Since the Afghan Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021, Pakistan has faced an increase in militant attacks in its Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, which border Afghanistan.
