Bahawalpur District Kicks Off First Polio Eradication Campaign of 2024

The inaugural polio eradication campaign of the new year is set to launch in Bahawalpur district, commencing on February 2 and running through February 4. A supplementary catch-up activity will follow on February 5 to ensure no child is left unvaccinated. This announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur, Syed Hassan Raza, during a preparatory meeting focused on reviewing arrangements for the anti-polio drive.

Comprehensive Vaccination Strategy Unveiled

Addressing the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Raza emphasized the critical importance of inter-departmental coordination to guarantee the campaign's success. He underscored that eradicating polio is a shared national responsibility and issued a stern warning against any negligence in executing this vital public health mission.

In a detailed briefing, Dr. Aamir Bashir, Chief Executive Officer of the District Health Authority Bahawalpur, revealed the campaign's ambitious scope:

  • More than 824,000 children under the age of five across the district will receive polio drops.
  • A total of 3,276 mobile teams have been organized to conduct door-to-door vaccinations.
  • Additionally, 195 fixed teams and 136 transit teams will be stationed at key locations such as bus terminals and railway stations to immunize children on the move.

Rigorous Monitoring and Accountability Measures

To ensure thorough oversight, Deputy Commissioner Raza has deployed 122 Union Council Monitoring Officers who will continuously supervise team performance, coverage, and quality in the field. He directed Assistant Commissioners and duty officers to maintain strict vigilance, stating that any lapses would not be tolerated.

The meeting also covered comprehensive preparations, including:

  1. Campaign logistics and team training protocols.
  2. Vaccine availability and distribution plans.
  3. Security arrangements to safeguard health workers and operations.

Health Department officials confirmed that all available resources are being mobilized to achieve the goal of declaring Bahawalpur a polio-free district. The session was attended by Assistant Commissioner Bahawalpur Saddar Hamza Ihtesham, along with representatives from various relevant departments, highlighting a unified approach to this public health initiative.
