In a major move to bolster public health, the federal government has sanctioned a substantial Rs40 billion package aimed at reviving and expanding the free healthcare services provided under the Sehat Sahulat Program. This decision marks a renewed push to strengthen universal health coverage across pivotal regions of the country.
Steering Committee Gives Green Light
The approval came during the 34th meeting of the National Steering Committee of the Sehat Sahulat Program, which was held on Monday. The session was chaired by Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and attended by senior officials from the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, as well as program management representatives.
The committee conducted a thorough review of the phased restoration of universal health coverage for all permanent resident families in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). The CEO of the Sehat Sahulat Program presented a briefing on the prime minister's directives for the immediate resumption of these critical services.
Financial Plan and Nationwide Launch
A key outcome of the meeting was the endorsement of a revised Project Concept (PC-I) with an estimated cost of Rs40 billion. This financial plan extends the program's operations through to June 30, 2027. Under this revived initiative, eligible families will continue to access free hospitalization services via a government-funded health insurance model.
To ensure seamless service delivery, the committee also approved extensions for existing contracts with key partners, including the State Life Insurance Corporation (SLIC) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). Furthermore, it was decided that outstanding liabilities would be settled through the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP), following the premier's instructions.
Focus on Modernization and Dignified Care
Addressing the gathering, Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal underscored the necessity of adopting contemporary health insurance frameworks and strategic purchasing mechanisms. He emphasized that these steps are crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, improving service quality, and upholding patient dignity.
Minister Kamal confirmed that the restored Sehat Sahulat services will be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister on January 16, 2026, marking the official nationwide launch. Officials expressed confidence that the revived program will significantly alleviate the financial burden on low- and middle-income households, reinforcing the government's commitment to equitable healthcare access for all citizens.
