Punjab Wildlife Issues Heatwave Guidelines to Protect Animals
Punjab Wildlife Heatwave Guidelines for Animals

The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department has issued comprehensive guidelines to protect animals and birds from the ongoing heatwave. The directives require officials of wildlife parks and zoos to ensure strict implementation of heat protection measures at all facilities managed by the department.

Key Measures for Animal Welfare

According to the guidelines, clean drinking water must be available round the clock in all cages, enclosures and animal compartments. Food and water should be placed in shaded areas to prevent spoilage and encourage consumption. Authorities have also been directed to provide adequate shade, taking into account the number of animals, and to regularly sprinkle water inside enclosures where needed.

Special Arrangements for Sensitive Species

The department ordered special arrangements for heat-sensitive species, including monkeys, bears, lions and tigers. Their enclosures should be equipped with fans, air coolers and ice. Additionally, ponds or water pools must be maintained to help animals cool down. These measures aim to mitigate the risk of heat stress, which can be fatal if not addressed promptly.

Veterinary Monitoring and Care

Veterinary staff have been instructed to closely monitor animals for signs of heat stress. They are to trim fur where necessary and provide Vitamin C, glucose and other supplements on the advice of specialists. Any animal showing symptoms of heat-related illness should receive immediate medical attention, the department added. This proactive approach ensures that animals receive timely care during extreme weather conditions.
