Helen Slater Backs Milly Alcock's Supergirl After Mixed BO

Helen Slater, who originated the role of Supergirl in the 1984 film, has publicly supported Milly Alcock after the latest Supergirl movie opened to a mixed box office reception. Slater praised Alcock's portrayal as "astonishing" and called on audiences to welcome fresh takes on the classic DC Comics character.

Slater Praises Alcock's Performance

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Slater expressed her admiration for the new film. "I loved the new Supergirl film," she said. She described Alcock as "astonishing" and highlighted her "fierce, strong and great comic timing." The endorsement carries weight given Slater's own experience as the first actress to bring Kara Zor-El to the big screen.

Box Office Disappointment

The new Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, opened with a domestic box office total below industry expectations. DC Studios co-chief executive Peter Safran acknowledged that the domestic debut did not meet expectations, though the studio remains confident in its long-term franchise plans. The film is part of DC Studios' evolving cinematic strategy under new leadership.

Slater's Training and Experience

Reflecting on her own preparation for the 1984 film, Slater recalled undergoing about four months of intensive training. She engaged in trampolining, fencing, and horseback riding, and gained approximately 15 pounds of muscle for the role. "I had been very slight before winning the part," she said, and embraced the physical challenge of portraying the superhero.

Working with Christopher Reeve

Slater also remembered working alongside Christopher Reeve, who played Superman at the time. Although an appearance by Reeve in Supergirl was discussed, it never materialized. Slater formed a friendship with Reeve and described him as "supportive, kind and protective" throughout production.

Original Film's Legacy

The original Supergirl earned about $14 million at the domestic box office after its 1984 release. Plans for additional films never materialized despite Slater initially signing a three-picture contract. She said she focused on continuing her acting career rather than dwelling on the film's commercial performance. Her later roles included playing the adoptive mother of Melissa Benoist's Supergirl in the television series Supergirl and a de-aged cameo in The Flash in 2023.

De-Aged Cameo and Academic Pursuits

Addressing the cameo, Slater explained that she filmed the sequence herself before visual effects artists digitally altered her appearance to resemble her younger self. Away from acting, Slater earned a doctorate in mythological studies and depth psychology. She believes legendary characters should continue evolving to reflect changing audiences and modern storytelling.
