Dan Howell and Phil Lester have opened up about how publicly confirming their long-rumored relationship has transformed both their personal lives and creative careers, as they prepare to take their new live show around the world. The British YouTube stars, who have worked together since 2009, revealed in October 2025 that they have been in a relationship for years after more than a decade of speculation from fans. Their announcement, made through a 46-minute video titled "Are Dan and Phil in a Relationship? The Truth," marked the first time they publicly addressed their romance.
Removing a Long-Held Burden
Speaking to Variety, the pair said finally being open has removed a burden they had carried throughout much of their careers. Howell explained that keeping such a significant part of their lives private created an emotional barrier between themselves and their audience. "It feels so different to have hard launched and be open about this," Howell said. "Living with this secret, having this wall up between ourselves and the audience and feeling like there is something to be afraid of, has just felt like this barrier the whole time."
Lester agreed, saying the decision has allowed them to perform without constantly editing stories or worrying about revealing too much. "We just want to go on stage and be completely ourselves and not hold anything back," he said.
Announcing the Hard Launch World Tour
Their newly announced HARD LAUNCH world tour will begin in September and include 65 dates across North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Mexico and the United Kingdom. It will be their fourth major tour together but the first since confirming their relationship publicly. The pair stressed that the production will not simply be a live version of their successful Hard Launch podcast. Instead, they promised a theatrical show featuring comedy, audience interaction and large-scale production elements. Howell joked that they had once again set ambitious expectations for themselves, while Lester insisted fans should expect something much bigger than two people sitting on stage talking.
Positive Response and Unchanged Dynamic
Since revealing their relationship, Howell and Lester have also launched the Hard Launch podcast, which quickly climbed podcast charts and attracted both longtime followers and new audiences. The creators admitted they had worried for years that revealing they were a couple could overshadow the comedy content that originally made them famous. However, they said the overwhelmingly positive response reassured them that fans appreciated both their honesty and the boundaries they continue to maintain around their private lives. Lester noted that despite the public confirmation, very little about their day-to-day personalities has changed. "I think what some people may have been surprised to see is that we are just acting pretty much exactly the same as we did before, because this is just what our relationship is like," he said.
Thoughts on Online Safety and Longevity
The interview also touched on the growing discussion around online safety and proposed restrictions on social media access for younger users in the United Kingdom. While both supported making online spaces safer, they argued that platforms such as YouTube can provide young people with valuable opportunities for creativity, learning and finding communities where they feel accepted. Looking back on their journey, Howell reflected on the unexpected longevity of their careers. When they began uploading videos, they never imagined they would still be creating content together more than 16 years later.
