PTA Warns SIMs on Expired CNICs Will Be Blocked

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a public awareness campaign warning that mobile SIMs registered on invalid, cancelled, or expired Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) may be suspended or blocked. The authority urged users to renew their identity documents promptly and update their information with mobile operators to avoid disruption in service.

Regulatory Directive and Timeline

According to PTA, mobile numbers linked to inactive, cancelled, or expired CNICs issued by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) could face suspension under existing regulatory rules. The authority advised users to renew their national identity cards before the expiry date to ensure uninterrupted mobile service. After renewal, users must immediately update their records with the relevant mobile company so that registration details remain correct.

Mass Blocking of SIMs Underway

Earlier this month, the interior ministry instructed PTA to act on NADRA's recommendations to curb misuse of mobile networks through fake or inactive identities. A NADRA spokesperson confirmed that a total of 4,906,611 SIMs would be blocked in phases. The spokesperson stated that the process targets IDs that have not been renewed or belong to deceased individuals, aiming to “enhance national security and strengthen the digital ecosystem by making it more secure and reliable.”

Impact on Users

Only SIMs registered on valid and verifiable identity documents will remain active. Users who fail to renew their CNICs on time may face suspension of mobile service. The PTA emphasized that timely renewal and information update are essential to avoid any disruption.
