A tragic road accident involving a water tanker turned deadly near Gulistan-e-Jauhar Flyover in Karachi on Tuesday, leading to dramatic scenes and severe traffic disruption. The incident occurred when the tanker ran over a motorcycle, killing one rider instantly and injuring another. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Muhammad Akram, who suffered fatal head injuries, while the injured, 30-year-old Abdul Shakoor, was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) via a Chhipa ambulance.
Angry Crowd Sets Tanker Ablaze
Witnesses reported that the tanker driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. Enraged bystanders vandalised the vehicle and set its cabin on fire. As flames engulfed the tanker, it unexpectedly began moving on its own, climbing onto the flyover and crashing into the safety railing before coming to a halt. Police arrived shortly after, but firefighters were delayed due to the massive traffic congestion caused by the incident. The fire was eventually brought under control, and the charred tanker was removed to the local police station.
Hours-Long Traffic Disruption
The accident brought traffic to a standstill on both carriageways of Rashid Minhas Road. Long queues of vehicles stretched from the Nipa intersection towards the Gulistan-e-Jauhar Flyover and from the Drigh Road Flyover towards Nipa. Traffic police remained on site for several hours to restore the flow of vehicles. According to officials, the congestion persisted for hours, affecting thousands of commuters.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the accident and are making efforts to trace and arrest the absconding tanker driver. Rescue officials confirmed that the victim's body was shifted to JPMC, where the injured man is receiving treatment. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the reckless driving of heavy vehicles in the city.
