Record Surge in Heavy Vehicle Imports
Pakistan's imports of heavy vehicles have reached a record level during the current fiscal year, driven by a sharp rise in purchases of buses and trucks. According to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), imports of buses and trucks totaled $262.4 million during the first 11 months of FY2025-26, marking the highest level ever recorded for the category. The figures represent a substantial increase compared to the same period of FY2024-25, when heavy vehicle imports stood at $57.8 million.
Completely Built Units Dominate Imports
SBP data indicates that the majority of these imports comprised completely built units (CBUs), reflecting growing demand for ready-to-use commercial vehicles. Market analysts attributed the surge to a combination of lower interest rates and government policy measures that have encouraged transport operators and businesses to modernize and expand their commercial fleets.
Indicators of Economic Activity
The increase in heavy vehicle imports is also seen as an indicator of improving business activity and greater investment in the transport and logistics sector, which plays a vital role in supporting trade and economic growth. Industry observers believe continued investment in commercial transport infrastructure could enhance freight capacity, improve supply chain efficiency, and strengthen the country's logistics network in the coming years.
