Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Syed Fakhar Jehan on Saturday inaugurated a Rs28 million project for the cleaning and rehabilitation of streams and natural waterways in PK-26, Buner. The initiative aims to reduce flood risks and protect lives, property and agricultural land.
Project Launch at Riga Khwar
The project was formally launched at Riga Khwar, where dredging and desilting operations commenced to remove accumulated silt, mud and sand from rivers and water channels. Officials of the Irrigation Department, local leaders, workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and a large number of residents attended the ceremony.
Government's Commitment to Flood Prevention
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Jehan said the provincial government was undertaking practical measures to restore natural waterways, strengthen flood prevention efforts and safeguard communities vulnerable to seasonal flooding. He said the timely cleaning of rivers, streams and khwars would improve the natural flow of water and help protect settlements, homes, farmland and public infrastructure from damage during heavy rains and potential flood emergencies.
Buner's History of Flash Floods
The minister noted that Buner had repeatedly suffered from flash floods and torrential flows in recent years, resulting in loss of life and extensive damage to homes, crops, infrastructure and other public assets. He said the government had therefore prioritised preventive measures to minimise future losses, enhance preparedness and ensure the safety of local communities.
“The rehabilitation of waterways is essential to reducing flood-related risks and protecting both livelihoods and public infrastructure,” he added.
