Google Expands AirDrop Support to More Android Devices Soon
Google is set to significantly expand AirDrop support to a broader range of Android devices in the near future, moving beyond its initial rollout on Pixel 10 phones. This development marks a major step in enhancing cross-platform compatibility between Android and Apple ecosystems, facilitating seamless file sharing and data transfer.
Expanding Quick Share Compatibility
Eric Kay, vice president of engineering for Android, confirmed in a recent press briefing that Google is working with Android partners to bring AirDrop support to many more devices. "We spent a lot of time and energy to make sure that we could build something that was compatible not only with iPhone but iPads and MacBooks," Kay stated. "Now that we've proven it out, we're working with our partners to expand it into the rest of the ecosystem, and you should see some exciting announcements coming very soon."
Currently, only Google's Pixel 10 phones can use Quick Share—Android's wireless peer-to-peer transfer feature, formerly known as Nearby Share—to communicate directly with Apple's AirDrop. This limitation is about to change as Google collaborates with various hardware manufacturers.
Partnerships and Industry Support
While Google has not yet specified which Android partners or devices will receive the update, indications from the industry suggest widespread adoption. Both Nothing and chipmaker Qualcomm hinted in November that support was on the way, signaling broader industry readiness for this cross-platform functionality.

"We're also going to be working to make it easy for people who do decide to switch to transfer their data and make sure they've got everything they had from their old phone," Kay explained during the briefing. "So there's a lot more going on with that."
This initiative aligns with Apple's own efforts since early 2024 to develop a user-friendly method for transferring data from iPhones to other devices. Collaborative testing between Google and Apple was observed in Android Canary 2512 for Pixel devices in December, indicating ongoing cooperation between the tech giants.
