A significant seminar focusing on the growing threats of social media intolerance and the online spread of violent extremism was successfully convened in Multan. The event, held at the DHA Arena on Thursday, was organized by the Media Cell for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) under the Press Information Department.
Experts Warn Against Digital Misuse
The primary goal of the gathering was to shed light on the serious societal challenges emerging from the misuse of popular digital platforms. A key focus was placed on promoting responsible online behavior, especially among the younger generation. The seminar saw active participation from students and faculty members of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) and Women University Multan, alongside attendees from diverse backgrounds.
During their addresses, Professor Dr. Muhammad Daud from BZU and Professor Dr. Deeba Shehwar from Women University delivered a powerful message. They acknowledged social media's immense power in shaping public discourse but issued a stark warning. The professors emphasized that its irresponsible use is actively fueling hatred, intolerance, and extremist ideologies within Pakistani society. They called for a united front to combat the menace of fake news, targeted hate speech, and deliberate disinformation campaigns.
Government Initiatives and Collective Responsibility
Manager CVE Media Cell, Shehryar, took the opportunity to inform participants about various government-led initiatives. These programs are specifically designed to prevent violent extremism and enhance digital literacy among citizens. The role of different societal pillars was strongly underscored.
The speakers unanimously agreed that media organizations, educational institutions, and civil society have a critical part to play in this fight. A repeated call was made for the greater involvement of youth, encouraging them to lead the way in the positive, constructive, and ethical use of social media.
Recognition and Renewed Commitment
A moment of recognition featured Director Press Information Department Shahid Imran Ranjha and DG PID Tahira Syed distributing shields to outstanding students. The seminar concluded on a note of determined resolve. Participants renewed their commitment to continue and expand awareness campaigns and training programs. The ultimate aim is to foster a digital culture rooted in tolerance, responsibility, and mutual respect.
