YouTube Moves AI Labels to Prominent Positions for Better Visibility
YouTube Relocates AI Labels for Clearer Visibility

Following Google's expansion of AI verification efforts at I/O, YouTube is now taking AI labeling more seriously. The platform announced it is relocating AI disclosures on both Shorts and long-form videos to enhance visibility and will begin automatically identifying and labeling AI-generated content.

Changes to AI Label Placement

For regular YouTube videos, the AI label, which displays an "AI" icon next to a recognizable information symbol, will now appear directly below the video player and above the description. Previously, this information was hidden within the video description under a "How this content was made" section, requiring users to manually expand and inspect each video's description.

For YouTube Shorts, the AI label will appear as an overlay on the video itself. YouTube has been testing a variation of this label for some time and previously used an overlay to flag content containing "altered or synthetic content."

Consistency and Automation

YouTube's AI labeling practices have been inconsistent until now, but these updates aim to establish a consistent system. "By moving these labels on to the main stage, viewers get the context they need at a glance," YouTube stated in its announcement. "This is now the single label format for all photorealistic and meaningfully AI altered or generated content on YouTube. For content that is unrealistic, animated, or slightly altered, viewers can find this disclosure in the expanded description."

YouTube is also expanding its AI labeling efforts by implementing new internal signals to automatically identify and label AI-generated videos. While creators are still required to manually disclose when they use photorealistic AI, if a creator does not specify, an AI label will be applied automatically if YouTube's systems detect significant photorealistic AI use.

Correcting Mislabeling

If video content is incorrectly flagged and labeled, creators can update the disclosure status in YouTube Studio. However, if the creator used YouTube's AI tools like Veo or Dream Screen, or if the content contains C2PA metadata indicating it was fully AI-generated, those AI disclosures will be permanent.

YouTube already has automated systems using markers like C2PA and Google's SynthID to detect AI-generated and synthetically altered content. These changes aim to provide creators and viewers with the right information easily. Importantly, disclosure labels alone will not impact monetization or recommendation algorithms.
