A joint statement released Monday emphasized that the pace of frontier AI development renders current cyber risk assumptions obsolete in a matter of months, not years.
AI Lowers Barriers for Malicious Actors
The advisory highlighted that AI reduces the barriers for malicious actors while increasing the speed and complexity of attacks. The Five Eyes agencies urged governments and businesses to act swiftly to bolster their cyber defenses. “Breaches will occur. Preparedness helps you contain them quickly and prevent escalation into major operational and financial crises,” the statement read.
To improve defenses, organizations are advised to integrate AI tools into their security operations, update legacy systems, and restrict access to critical infrastructure. The warning comes amid growing concerns over AI-enhanced hacking capabilities.
Anthropic’s Mythos Models Spark Concern
The risk of AI-powered cyberattacks came into sharp focus after US-based startup Anthropic revealed in April that its cutting-edge Mythos models possessed unprecedented abilities to identify software vulnerabilities. Anthropic later suspended access to Mythos 5 and a restricted version called Fable 5 in response to a US national security order. Just days after Fable 5’s public launch, the company received a government directive barring all foreign nationals from accessing both models.
The intervention is notable given the White House’s broader push to loosen AI oversight, including efforts to block states from implementing their own regulations. The Five Eyes advisory underscores the global urgency to address AI-driven cyber threats, with the alliance calling for proactive measures to safeguard critical systems.
