Canon EOS R6 Gets Major Video Upgrade with New Firmware

Canon has released a major firmware update for its popular EOS R6 mirrorless camera, significantly enhancing its video capabilities. The update, version 1.4.0, brings several highly requested features that make the EOS R6 a more compelling choice for videographers and content creators.

Key Video Upgrades

The most notable addition is the ability to record 4K video at 60 frames per second oversampled from a 5.1K readout. This results in sharper, more detailed footage compared to the previous line-skipping method. Additionally, the camera now supports 4K 30p oversampled from 5.1K in all frame rates, including when using Canon Log or HDR PQ.

Improved Autofocus and Stabilization

The firmware also enhances the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, adding animal eye tracking for video. This allows the camera to maintain focus on the eyes of dogs, cats, and birds during recording. The in-body image stabilization (IBIS) has been improved to work more effectively with RF lenses, providing up to 8 stops of shake correction.

Additional Features

Other updates include support for the Canon Log 3 gamma curve, which offers better dynamic range and easier color grading. The update also adds FTP transfer capabilities for images and videos, as well as improved compatibility with the Canon Mobile File Transfer app. Users can now also assign custom functions to the lens control ring.

Canon has also addressed some bugs and improved overall system stability. The firmware is available for free download from Canon's website. The EOS R6, originally launched in 2020, continues to receive support from Canon, cementing its position as a versatile hybrid camera for both stills and video.
