Elon Musk's social media platform X was largely restored on Monday after thousands of users worldwide reported access issues, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. The disruption began around 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, with reports surging to over 25,000 in the United States before subsiding to approximately 620 by the afternoon. In Canada, reports dropped from a peak of more than 3,400 to roughly 30, while the United Kingdom saw issues decline after topping 9,000 earlier in the day.
Global Impact and User Reports
Downdetector, which compiles outage reports from multiple sources, showed that the actual number of affected users may be higher than indicated, as submissions are voluntary. The platform also recorded a peak of 254 reports in Pakistan at 6:47 p.m. local time. The incident marked the second major outage for X in recent months, following a similar disruption in February that affected thousands in the U.S. and Britain.
NetBlocks Confirms No Censorship
Global internet observatory NetBlocks stated on social media: "X (formerly Twitter) is currently experiencing international outages; incident not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering." This clarification ruled out government-imposed restrictions as the cause.
SpaceX, which owns X, did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on the root cause of the outage. The platform has faced periodic technical issues since Musk's acquisition in 2022, often attributed to infrastructure changes and staff reductions.
