Alcaraz Battles Past Rublev to Reach Qatar Open Final
World number one Carlos Alcaraz showcased resilience and composure on Friday, narrowly defeating defending champion Andrey Rublev 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 in a gripping semifinal at the Qatar Open. The match, lasting two hours and two minutes, saw Alcaraz extend his perfect winning streak to 11 matches this season, as he advanced to his first final in Doha.
A Test of Nerves and Maturity
Alcaraz, playing his first tournament since completing a career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in February, faced significant challenges against Rublev. He twice failed to serve out the opening set and saw a 3-0 lead in the second set quickly erased. In a dramatic climax, Alcaraz missed three match points on serve at 5-3 before finally sealing the victory on his sixth opportunity.
Reflecting on his performance, the seven-time Grand Slam winner emphasized his growth. "The way that I am approaching every match, I'm just really proud about it," Alcaraz said. "It's something I am trying to be better at and it's paying off. I'm proud of myself for getting better and maturing." He added that maintaining calm under pressure has been key, noting, "If you want to find a solution to a problem, you should find it in a calm place... In these matches, I have been really calm, thinking clearly and being positive."
Fils Returns Strong to Secure Final Berth
In the other semifinal, 21-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils continued his impressive comeback, defeating sixth seed Jakub Mensik 6-4, 7-6 (7/4). This victory marks Fils' first tour-level final since winning the ATP 500 trophy in Tokyo in 2024, following an eight-month hiatus due to a back injury.
Fils, currently ranked 40th, expressed the difficulty of his recovery journey. "It’s been a tough journey," he admitted. "Eight months without playing tennis, just watching the other guys battling... Staying in my bed and doing recovery was very long. My team knows how tough it was, but now it feels even better when I am coming back like this. To be back in a final, it means a lot."
With recent coaching additions, including 2001 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, Fils is confident ahead of the final against Alcaraz, despite losing both previous meetings on clay. "If you believe, then maybe you can do it, so I believe 100 percent," Fils stated. "Let's see tomorrow on the court but for sure I am coming on court to fight."
