The J.League, Japan's top professional football competition, has unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with Pokémon that will assign a unique partner Pokémon to each of its 60 clubs across all three professional divisions. The initiative, covering J1, J2, and J3, marks one of the largest cross-brand partnerships between a football league and a gaming franchise.
Partnership Details and Reveal Date
The complete list of club and Pokémon pairings is scheduled to be revealed on July 6, 2025, at 18:00 JST. This announcement comes ahead of the 2026 J.League season, which kicks off on August 7. The collaboration was first teased on the J.League's official X account with a silhouette of Pikachu and the caption “Oh!?”. The league later confirmed the partnership with a post stating, “The J.League is evolving.”
Scope of the Collaboration
Unlike previous crossovers that focused solely on the top division, this initiative covers every professional club in Japan's football pyramid. Each of the 60 clubs—20 in J1, 20 in J2, and 20 in J3—will receive an official partner Pokémon, making it a comprehensive league-wide effort. This scale distinguishes it as one of the most extensive collaborations between a sports league and a major entertainment brand.
Previous J.League and Pokémon Collaboration
This is not the first time the J.League and Pokémon have joined forces. In 2014, the two organizations collaborated during the Family Join Days campaign. As part of that initiative, young supporters attending matches received a promotional Pikachu trading card. The limited-edition card later became a sought-after collector's item, noted for being one of the few official crossovers between professional football and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Anticipation for the July 6 Reveal
Attention now turns to the July 6 reveal, when supporters will discover which Pokémon has been assigned to each club. The announcement has generated significant excitement among fans of both football and Pokémon, who are eager to see how the pairings reflect the identities of their favorite clubs.
