Peace Sports Festival Opens in Upper Dir

The fifth Peace Sports Festival commenced in Upper Dir on Friday with a vibrant opening ceremony. The event featured cricket competitions, a paragliding display, and various activities designed to foster youth engagement and social cohesion.

Organized under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s public agenda in collaboration with the district administration and the District Sports Office, the festival brings together athletes from across the district for a range of sporting events.

Tribute to Mehdi Hassan

District Sports Officer Siddiq Ullah noted that the festival includes junior and senior cricket tournaments, as well as a Legends Cricket League, aimed at encouraging emerging talent and strengthening the local sporting culture.

A paragliding exhibition by the Dir Paragliding Club drew considerable attention during the opening ceremony and was among the main attractions.

Inclusive Sports Activities

Organizers also arranged a special cricket match for persons with disabilities, which received an enthusiastic response from spectators. Participants were later honored with commemorative trophies in recognition of their involvement.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Finance) Dr. Sadiq Ali attended the ceremony as the chief guest, alongside local officials, sports organizers, community representatives, and members of the sporting fraternity.

Chief organizer Ishaq Al-Badri stated that the festival aims to provide constructive opportunities for young people and encourage healthy recreational activities.

Speakers at the event highlighted the role of sport in promoting peace, unity, and social harmony. Siddiq Ullah mentioned that similar sporting activities are being organized across Upper Dir to encourage wider participation among youth and help identify promising talent.

Organizers expressed optimism that the festival would contribute to the development of sport in the district and provide a valuable platform for emerging athletes to showcase their abilities.
