Spain's 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Guadalajara secured top spot in World Cup Group H, but the win came at a cost as wingers Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino suffered injuries that could leave the European champions short of attacking options for the knockout stages.
Williams and Pino Injured Against Uruguay
Williams was forced off with a groin problem during the match, while Pino required treatment late in the second half after hurting his shoulder, although he managed to finish the game. Coach Luis de la Fuente expressed concern after the match, stating that Pino might miss the rest of the World Cup. “(Williams had) a slight discomfort. It might be a strain, or maybe just fatigue,” de la Fuente told reporters. “The worst part is the tremendous pain we feel over what’s happening with Yeremy — he might miss the (rest of the) World Cup,” he added, describing Pino’s effort as “heroic.”
Initially, de la Fuente feared Pino had broken his collarbone, but tests conducted on Saturday ruled out a fracture, diagnosing a sprain instead. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) released a statement confirming: “Nico Williams has suffered a muscle injury in his right adductor following a hard collision during the match against Uruguay. Both injuries are moderate, and their recovery will determine their availability.”
Spain's Winger Crisis Deepens
Spain arrived at the tournament with doubts over the fitness of Williams and Lamine Yamal, who sustained hamstring injuries in April. While Yamal has recovered steadily, Victor Munoz, who recently signed for Liverpool from Osasuna, is still waiting to make his tournament debut due to a leg muscle injury. This leaves de la Fuente short of natural options out wide.
If Williams, Pino, and Munoz are unavailable, de la Fuente could return Gavi to the left wing, as he did in Spain’s goalless draw with Cape Verde. Another possibility is shifting Mikel Oyarzabal to the left, with Ferran Torres or Borja Iglesias starting at center forward and Yamal on the right wing.
Impact on Spain's Knockout Prospects
The injuries come at a critical time as Spain prepare for the knockout stages. With their depth on the wings tested, de la Fuente will need to rely on versatility and tactical adjustments to maintain their attacking threat. The team's performance against Uruguay showed their ability to grind out results, but the loss of key wingers could limit their creativity and pace in the final third.
