LONDON: FIFA has canceled World Cup tickets for approximately 60 fans who were able to mistakenly purchase them for free due to a website error. The world soccer governing body is now requesting full payment from those affected.
Notification and Resolution
The affected fans were notified on Wednesday about tickets that were "allocated at no charge (0 USD) due to a prior payment issue during the checkout process," FIFA stated on X. The organization clarified that the tickets remain reserved for these fans, who have been invited to complete the correct payment. FIFA expressed regret over the error and any inconvenience caused.
Ongoing Ticketing Controversies
This incident is the latest hiccup in a controversial ticketing process for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Last week, the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey announced they had issued a subpoena to FIFA over its ticketing practices, citing concerns about fans' seat locations at the World Cup. The 48-team tournament is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19.
FIFA's handling of ticket sales has drawn scrutiny, with fans and officials raising questions about transparency and fairness. The organization has faced criticism for various issues, including pricing, allocation, and technical glitches. Despite these challenges, FIFA maintains that it is working to ensure a smooth experience for attendees.
