Punjab Information Minister Apologizes for Disseminating Incorrect Details on Lahore Manhole Tragedy
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari on Thursday publicly expressed profound shame and embarrassment for having shared inaccurate information regarding the tragic Bhati Gate manhole incident in Lahore. The minister revealed that the initial facts provided to her by the local administration were wrong and misleading, leading her to convey incorrect details to the media in good faith.
Administration Blamed for Concealing Mistakes
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Azma Bokhari stated that the administration attempted to conceal its grave error by supplying false information about the incident, which she then relayed to journalists. She emphasized that the provincial government is heartbroken and deeply ashamed over the tragic event that claimed the lives of a mother and her young daughter.
"We are profoundly saddened and ashamed by this heartbreaking incident. The administration shared incorrect facts to hide its mistake. Instead of covering up errors, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif openly acknowledged the lapses, expressed remorse, and ensured the arrest of those responsible. In Punjab, there is no forgiveness for the loss of human life," Bokhari wrote.
Personal Embarrassment and Resignation Offer
The minister added that she felt personally embarrassed by the episode and had even offered to resign after discovering the information was inaccurate. However, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif intervened, stopping her resignation and clarifying that the error did not lie with Bokhari.
"I am personally very ashamed and seek forgiveness. I shared with the media exactly what the administration told me. I was even prepared to resign, but the chief minister stated it was not my mistake," Bokhari explained, concluding with prayers for the safety of all citizens.
Chief Minister Formally Exonerates Information Minister
Later, while chairing a high-level meeting on the fatal manhole incident, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif formally exonerated Azma Bokhari of any wrongdoing related to the dissemination of incorrect information. The chief minister observed that the information minister had shared the same version of events with the media that had been officially conveyed to her by the administration.
This development underscores the provincial government's commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing administrative failures, particularly in matters involving public safety and tragic loss of life.
