Pakistan's majestic mountain ranges, home to some of the world's highest peaks including the formidable K2, are increasingly captivating the attention of international climbers, according to a senior official from the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Major General (R) Irfan Arshad Khan, President of the Alpine Club, shared exclusive insights with Express Tribune during an interview at the club's Secretariat located within the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.
Mountaineering as a National Asset
Khan described mountaineering as an inherently life-threatening sport where Pakistani climbers have consistently demonstrated exceptional skill and bravery, bringing international acclaim to the nation. He emphasized that the mountains of Pakistan are a divine gift to our country, underscoring their significance beyond mere physical landmarks. The future of mountaineering in Pakistan, he asserted, is extremely bright with untapped potential waiting to be harnessed through strategic initiatives.
Collaborative Efforts with Government
In partnership with governmental bodies, the Alpine Club is actively working to promote mountaineering and adventure sports across Pakistan. Khan outlined a comprehensive strategy focused on:
- Developing modern infrastructure to support climbers
- Implementing specialized training programs for personnel
- Strengthening rescue systems for both domestic and international adventurers
International Partnerships and Tourism Growth
To elevate Pakistan's mountaineering standards, agreements are currently being negotiated with several countries, including France and Italy, to foster greater collaboration in this field. Khan highlighted that foreign tourism is poised to expand further thanks to:
- Streamlined online visa facilities making entry more accessible
- Enhanced security measures ensuring safer travel experiences
- A holistic plan crafted in consultation with government institutions to attract more global climbers while stimulating economic growth
Enhancing Porter Capabilities and Safety Measures
Khan acknowledged the renowned bravery of Pakistani porters, though he noted that Nepali porters currently hold certain tactical advantages. To bridge this gap, the Alpine Club is rolling out:
- Specialized training and coaching programs for porters and guides
- Initiatives aimed at ensuring organized and secure trekking and climbing expeditions
Furthermore, plans are underway to modernize rescue operations, including the implementation of helicopter-assisted rescues through collaborations with foreign companies, thereby enhancing emergency response capabilities in remote mountainous regions.
Promoting Inclusivity and Awareness
Efforts are also being directed towards increasing female participation in mountaineering, alongside grassroots campaigns designed to raise public awareness about the sport. Khan reassured that Pakistan is a safe country, with the northern areas offering world-class facilities tailored for climbers and tourists alike, positioning Pakistan as a premier destination for adventure enthusiasts globally.
