A significant weather system swept across multiple regions of Pakistan on Sunday, bringing widespread rain and snowfall that intensified the ongoing cold spell. The conditions provided much-needed relief from prolonged dry weather while also causing some localized disruptions.
Rain Returns to Balochistan After Ten Months
The province of Balochistan witnessed rainfall after a gap of nearly ten months, leading to a sharp and noticeable drop in temperatures. Quetta and its surrounding areas experienced light morning rain, resulting in weather that was chilly yet pleasant for residents.
Similar conditions were reported in several other districts including Chaman, Panjgur, Qalat, Loralai, Kharan, and Qila Saifullah, where cold winds followed the showers. However, the rainfall and gusty winds caused minor damage in some localities, with reports of collapsed walls and uprooted trees.
The Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in northern Ziarat and adjacent areas, with snowfall likely in mountainous regions. Experts warn that the prevailing system could further intensify cold conditions over the next few days.
Snowfall in KP and Rain in Punjab
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper areas such as Mahodand, Kalam, Malam Jabba, and Gabin Jabba in the Swat Valley continued to receive snowfall. This has led to severe cold in the adjacent plains but has also become a magnet for tourists eager to experience the winter scenery.
Rain also graced the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with light to heavy showers recorded in different localities, pushing temperatures down further. The weather department predicts additional rainfall in the coming days.
Districts like Haripur, Khanpur, and Ghazi received rain after a long dry period, offering significant relief to farmers who described the rainfall as beneficial for standing crops. Light rain was also recorded in Abbottabad and nearby areas, adding to the cold spell.
Azad Kashmir Sees Snow and Fire Relief
In Azad Kashmir, the Neelum Valley experienced persistent rain in its lower areas, while intermittent snowfall continued in the upper regions, leaving mountains blanketed in white. An important positive outcome of this precipitation was that it helped extinguish ongoing forest fires in the area.
Authorities across the affected regions have advised residents to exercise caution. They recommend avoiding unnecessary travel and taking precautionary measures, particularly in hilly and snowbound areas where conditions can be hazardous.
