Security Measures Nationwide for 9th Muharram Processions
Mourning processions for the 9th of Muharram are being held across Pakistan today to pay tribute to the martyrs of Karbala, with security placed on high alert throughout the country. Police, Rangers, and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed along procession routes in major cities. Security has also been tightened at entry and exit points, while walk-through gates, CCTV cameras, and additional monitoring equipment have been installed at sensitive locations. Traffic diversion plans have been put into effect in several cities, and mobile phone services may remain partially suspended in selected areas as part of precautionary security measures.
Main Processions in Major Cities
In Lahore, the main 9th Muharram procession will begin from Pando Street in Islampura and conclude at Khaima-e-Sadaat Imambargah after passing through its traditional route. In Islamabad, the central procession will start from Imambargah G-6 Ithna Ashari, with roads along the route closed to regular traffic. Karachi’s main procession is scheduled to commence at 1pm from Nishtar Park after a majlis addressed by Allama Shehenshah Hussain Naqvi. The procession will move through its customary route, including Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road and M.A. Jinnah Road, before ending at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.
Processions in Multan, Peshawar, and Quetta
In Multan, the central mourning procession will be taken out from Mumtazabad Imambargah. Authorities are closely monitoring the route through CCTV surveillance and other security arrangements. Several processions are also being held across Peshawar from different imambargahs. Security and administrative preparations have been completed, and major processions will continue throughout the day and evening under strict security cover. In Quetta, the Shabeeh Zuljanah procession will start from Nasir-ul-Aza Imambargah. Mobile phone services have been suspended in the city, while roads and streets connected to procession routes have been sealed with containers. As a precaution, markets and shops along the routes have also been closed.
Public Advisory and Security Coordination
Authorities have advised citizens to follow traffic guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel during procession hours to help maintain security and ensure the smooth conduct of events. The provincial government has approved Rs270.5 billion in demands for grants as the government defends its budget.
