A delegation from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) called on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati on Friday and commended the provincial government for the historic passage of the Child Marriage Prohibition Law. The delegation, led by UNFPA Country Representative Dr. Luay Shabaneh, acknowledged the legislation as a landmark achievement in protecting the rights of children and women.
Historic Step for Women's Rights
Speaker Swati reiterated the provincial assembly's commitment to safeguarding women's rights and ensuring their empowerment. He termed the law a historic step toward eliminating child marriages and protecting young girls from forced unions. The speaker also highlighted other initiatives taken by the provincial government to improve the status of women in the region.
UNFPA's Support and Collaboration
The UNFPA delegation assured continued support for the provincial government in implementing the law effectively. They emphasized the need for awareness campaigns to educate communities about the harmful effects of child marriage and the legal consequences. The delegation also discussed potential areas of collaboration, including reproductive health services and data collection on child marriage cases.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing a shared commitment to ending child marriage and promoting gender equality in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
