Three Arrested in Peshawar Gang Rape Case, Jirga Members Held

Police have arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged gang rape case in the Badaber area of Peshawar, while several members of a local jirga involved in handling the matter have also been taken into custody, officials said.

Incident and Jirga Involvement

According to police, the alleged incident occurred a few months ago. Instead of reporting the matter to law enforcement authorities, it was reportedly taken before a local jirga, which decided that one of the accused would marry the victim and compensation would be paid to her family.

Officials said a dispute later arose over the payment of the agreed compensation amount. Following the disagreement, the victim's father approached police and filed a complaint.

Police Action and Arrests

Police registered a formal FIR and immediately arrested the three suspects. During the initial investigation, authorities found evidence suggesting there had been prior contact between the suspects and the victim.

Several jirga members who allegedly participated in deciding the case outside the legal framework were also detained for questioning.

Ongoing Investigation

Police said investigations are continuing to determine all aspects of the case and establish the facts surrounding the allegations. Authorities reiterated that criminal cases must be dealt with through the legal system and warned against resolving serious offences through informal arrangements.
