KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi Leads PTI Overnight Sit-In at Adiala Jail

In a significant political development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, alongside PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and other party members, staged a protest sit-in outside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on Thursday. The demonstration was organized to demand access for incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan to his family and personal physicians, highlighting growing concerns over his health and legal rights.

"A Matter of Life" for Imran Khan

Speaking to reporters near a police picket outside the jail, Chief Minister Afridi emphasized the gravity of the situation, describing it as "a matter of life" for the PTI chief. He announced that he and PTI parliamentarians would camp at the site throughout the night, vowing not to let the issue be normalized. "We will not let it get normalized. The whole nation should remain alert," Afridi declared, hours after being denied a meeting with Khan by prison authorities.

Afridi revealed that several PTI parliamentarians had already joined the protest, with more expected to arrive soon. He stressed that they were waiting for Khan's family and personal doctors to be allowed a meeting, warning that "if an effort is made to worsen the situation unnecessarily, then all the responsibility would lie on the government and those who don't allow meeting." He added that the situation could be averted if a meeting is permitted, underscoring the urgency of the matter.

Persistent Denials and Health Concerns

This protest comes after the jail administration refused to allow Afridi, Khan's sisters, and other PTI leaders to meet with the ex-premier on a day designated for such visits. The PTI claims that Khan's family last met with him on December 2, last year, and Afridi has been seeking a meeting since assuming office in October, without success.

The protest gains added significance following recent media reports that Imran Khan is suffering from an eye ailment that could permanently damage his eyesight if not treated promptly. It was reported that Khan was briefly taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for treatment over the weekend before being returned to jail, a move confirmed by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

PTI Leaders Voice Frustration and Legal Violations

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, speaking at the protest, expressed frustration over repeated denials of meeting requests. He asserted that they would not return without meeting Khan and raised alarms about his health reports. Raja accused the government of dishonesty, stating, "It is crystal clear that this fraudulent government kept on telling lies for five days," and noted that Khan's family was not informed when he was taken to the hospital, which he called a violation of law.

Raja emphasized that the PTI has no trust in government claims until Khan's family, sisters, and personal physicians are allowed to meet him. He appealed to party parliamentarians, including MNAs, MPAs, and senators, to join the sit-in and warned that if access is not granted by today, the party would announce a plan of action. "This couldn't happen that we and the masses remained silent and this fascism continued. We would continue to speak for our rights while remaining peaceful," he added.

Historical Context and Ongoing Struggles

This is not the first time the PTI has protested outside Adiala Jail; in the past, the party has held several sit-ins seeking meetings with Khan, sometimes facing police action. The current protest underscores the party's intensified demand for access, driven by health concerns and perceived legal breaches. The situation reflects broader tensions in Pakistan's political landscape, with the PTI leveraging public sympathy and legal arguments to pressure the government.

As the night progresses, the protest sit-in symbolizes a standoff between the PTI and authorities, with implications for political stability and human rights discourse in the country.
